Biography: Andrew Cohen
I am a teacher and musician. I currently work for the Durham District School Board, teaching Grade 6-8 Instrumental Music and Grade 7 English. A native of Melbourne, Australia, I have taught in Adelaide, New Orleans, and Durham for 16 years. Subjects taught include Music, English, Math, History, Religious Education, Computing, Ethics, French and Latin, from Grades 2-12.
As a musician, I trained in classical piano performance at the University of Adelaide's Elder Conservatorium, studying under Monica Laczofy and Stefan Ammer. After graduating, I gained practical experience in jazz and popular music fields, and worked semi-professionally as an accompanist and performer. I also served as Music Director as Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Adelaide.
From 2000-2003, I lived and worked in New Orleans, teaching at Trinity Episcopal School and working professionally as a freelance accompanist, including performing for the True Blue Cafe's musical theatre performances in the summers of 2001 and 2002.
In 2003, I emigrated to Canada, which is now home. I continue to perform and accompany, including occasional session work, and serve as Music Facilitator at Whitby Baptist Church.
My passion is music and music education. My current research interests are integrating technology in music education, with a specific focus on using technology to liberate students' innate creativity.
I am married to Elita Partosoedarso, a lecturer at UOIT. We have two children, Ade and Ben, and a dog, Hope. My other passion is mountain biking; the photos used in headers in this website were taken while biking around Durham region (view the original photos in the gallery below).
